The Power of Resistance: India’s National Oil Company and International Activism in Sudan

India is widely regarded as one of the world’s next major economic and political powers. It sports a roaring economy, a rising political ambition, and boasts the wonders of Bollywood. But India’s rise is heavily contingent on its access to foreign oil and gas to fuel its economy at home. Already its national oil companies have begun to scour the globe for precious black gold. Their success holds vital political and social consequences not only for India but also for the countries where they invest.

This PhD thesis explores the investment of India’s leading national oil company, OVL, in the war-torn African country of Sudan. It explains why OVL decided to stay amidst calls from international human rights groups to withdraw its investment from Sudan and relates the fantastic rise of the Indian company in the international oil industry over the past decade.
