At the Department of Marketing, we focus on solving important societal and business challenges through impactful research and collaboration. Our work covers diverse and future-oriented areas, such as understanding consumer behavior, strengthening brand relationships, improving digital interactions, optimizing B2B and sales processes, and promoting sustainability in business practices.
We partner with businesses, policymakers, and global experts to ensure our insights shape real-world decisions. Our projects help companies and communities navigate critical changes, such as digital transformation, ethical consumption, and sustainable market development, contributing positively to society and the economy.
Our research addresses societal challenges like promoting responsible consumption, enhancing consumer welfare, and facilitating sustainable business models. By investigating emerging issues such as digital ethics, cultural shifts in consumer practices, and innovative approaches to sustainability, we prepare organizations and society for ongoing change and complexity.

We are committed to being a leading provider of marketing education in Scandinavia and a globally recognised marketing department, valued for our excellent research and research-based teaching. While marketing is at the core of our work, we also draw on other disciplines to enhance the quality of our research. This enables us to publish in leading marketing and interdisciplinary journals.
Our mission is to deliver high-quality, research-based education to a global audience at all levels – bachelor, master and executive. Through pedagogically innovative research-based teaching, we contribute to a wide range of courses and programmes across the business school, ensuring that our graduates are equipped with the latest research insights and strong critical thinking skills they can apply in practice.

Research project highlight: What Happens to Us Online After Death?
The project, funded by Denmark’s Independent Research Fund (Danmarks Frie Forskningsfond) under the Inge Lehmann talent programme, explores our “digital afterlife”—specifically how emerging technologies (like AI-driven SMS messages and phone calls) can keep aspects of a person alive after death, and examines the implications of this phenomenon for how we understand life, death, and grieving in a digital age. The project not only investigates how these technologies affect mourning practices but also raises broader ethical questions about identity, memory, and the commercialization of death in the digital era.

Our research
We study how people, organizations and technology shape markets. Our research spans consumer behaviour and branding, digital platforms and AI, B2B marketing and services, tourism and place branding, and design-driven innovation. Across topics we apply advanced methods to generate empirical evidence and translate insights into better decisions for business and society. We work with practice and policy.
Our work makes a difference beyond academia. It helps consumers navigate choices, supports companies in acting responsibly, and informs policymakers in creating fairer markets. By linking marketing to challenges such as digital transformation, sustainability, well-being and inclusive growth, our research contributes to stronger businesses and more resilient societies. In this way, marketing research becomes a driver of positive change for people and communities.
Our research units
Advances in Branding Research Cluster (ABRC)
The ABRC connects thought leaders to push the boundaries of branding research. We unite researchers across CBS and beyond to foster inclusive, cutting-edge dialogue. Open to all ontological, epistemological, and methodological perspectives, we aim to create impactful insights that advance branding theory and practice.
B2B Marketing and Sales Research Cluster (B2BMSRC)
The B2BMSRC challenges the status quo of Business-to-Business research through interdisciplinary collaboration, and long-term partnerships. Our team comprises researchers who investigate different aspects of marketing, marketing management, and marketing strategy between organizations.
Consumer Research Cluster (CRC)
The CRC studies how people think, feel, and behave in the marketplace. It explores what people need, want, and buy, and how they interact with products, brands, companies, other consumers, and employees. Highlighting the human side of consumption, the CRC uses both qualitative and quantitative methods across multiple research domains.
Digital Marketing Research Cluster (DMRC)
The DMRC brings together researchers who look into how digitalization is changing consumer behavior (e.g., purchase behavior in multichannel environments, response to digital marketing along the purchase funnel, brand perceptions), organizations (e.g., digital advertising, influencer marketing, sales), as well as the society (e.g., privacy and its influence on how companies and consumers use the online channel) and higher education (e.g., teacher-student interactions in the digital space).
Center for Tourism and Hospitality Management (THM)
The THM addresses relevant issues in the field of tourism with rigorous qualitative and quantitative methods. Within the wider field of tourism, our members focus on areas such as tourist behavior and decision-making, hospitality management, destination image and branding, and tourism performance.

PhD Program in Marketing Science
The Department aspires to offer research-based education that meets high international standards in the field of Marketing. Regardless of their specific research area, our PhD graduates are therefore expected to have comprehensive insights into the foundational theories and methods of the Marketing discipline and those of the primary research cluster they are affiliated with. These insights should be achieved through foundational PhD courses successfully completed by the PhD students.
Each PhD student has a minimum of two Supervisors, with one designated as the primary supervisor who also gives advice on course work and teaching assignments.
While we strive to allow for freedom of choice in creating a fitting teaching portfolio, the Department of Marketing also wants to contribute to developing our own PhD students’ capability in teaching core marketing topics. We therefore encourage our PhD students’ involvement in both generic marketing courses as well as more specialized courses that reflect the PhD students’ research interest, if possible.
PhD students are also expected to be actively involved in academic activities within their research cluster and the wider Department, and to contribute to its social and collegial culture. The Department hosts an Annual PhD Day and invites scholars from international institutions to provide feedback and feedforward on the research presentations of PhD students.

Being a PhD student in MARKT
As a PhD at the Department of Marketing I’ve experienced a great balance of flexibility and support. I’ve had the freedom to pursue my research interests, while also knowing that I could always knock on a senior colleague’s door to seek guidance or advice on the academic challenges I was facing - Anne Toldbod, PhD student.
PhD programmes within marketing
How to apply
All vacant positions are announced on the CBS website. Usually, we will announce PhD positions in January/February for a starting date on September 1st. PhD positions in externally funded projects may have a different starting date.
Application
The application procedure is outlined in the position announcements. Usually, we will post positions within broad topics fitting to one of our research clusters. PhD applicants will then write a project proposal fitting to one of the announced topics. However, applicants are also welcome to write a proposal on a topic of their own choosing within the area of marketing science.
Content and structure
We offer a three-year long PhD programme. While the Department strives to allow for freedom of choice in creating a fitting course portfolio, it also aims to educate its own PhD students through course work. Therefore, each PhD student at the Department must take a foundational course in Consumer Behavior (5 ECTS) and Marketing Strategy (2.5 ECTS), as long as these courses are offered by the Department. It is also required for PhD students to take at least one methods course (qualitative, quantitative, or experimental). In special cases, the PhD coordination committee can waive these requirements.
Link to research clusters
PhD students can choose to be affiliated with any number of research clusters beyond their primary research cluster by notifying the relevant cluster heads (upon which they will be invited to all cluster activities). Members of the primary research cluster will give guidance to PhD students, e.g. on relevant PhD courses, literature, relevant conferences, etc.
Career paths & guidance
After graduation, the Department strives for its PhD students to succeed either in academic research careers or in careers outside of academia, meaning in private firms or public institutions, where the PhD graduates’ sophisticated research skills are in demand. While we generally recommend PhD graduates to expand their academic skills and experiences through (intermediate) employment elsewhere, the Department may re-employ its own PhD graduates as PostDocs/Assistant Professors, if there is a strong fit with MARKTG’s strategy and teaching needs, funding permitting.
The PhD students will have regular meetings with the Academic PhD coordinator (who is also the Department’s PhD placement officer) to discuss aspirations and career options. PhD students can schedule additional appointments for advice throughout their PhD period.
