CBS Maritime
CBS Maritime works as a cross departmental platform and is broadly embedded in the relevant research environments and teaching programs at CBS. Our strategy can be summarized as “Building Strength Through Collaboration”.
About (Panel content)
About CBS Maritime
CBS Maritime is committed to addressing the big question of how to achieve economic and social progress in the maritime industry. CBS Maritime aims to strengthen the maritime focus at CBS and to create the foundation for CBS as a stronger partner for the maritime industry, as well as for other universities and business schools.
CBS Maritime bridges classical management disciplines — such as economics and finance, organisation, marketing, management and accounting, logistics and operations research — with neighbouring disciplines that place business in a broader societal context, including business and economic history, law, economic geography, political science, sociology and information systems research.
Research Profile
The research profile builds on longstanding business school traditions. It combines the ability to model, calculate and optimise business issues with a critical stance towards methodological and disciplinary constraints.
Our research is developed together with the maritime industry. We work with maritime businesses and organisations to identify key questions and research challenges that are of common interest and significance to both practice and academia, including broad challenges and key research questions across different segments of the maritime supply chain.
Building Strength Through Collaboration
Internal Collaboration at CBS
Maritime management at CBS relies on close collaboration across academic units to address the strategic challenges of global shipping. The partnership between the Department of Operations Management and the Department of Strategy and Innovation is designed to unite complementary expertise, enabling stronger research, more coherent programme development, and a shared platform for shaping the future of maritime business. By aligning resources, cultivating PhD talent, and creating spaces for internal dialogue and knowledge exchange, we build a strategic foundation that advances maritime research and strengthens CBS’s position in this field.
External Research Networks
While our external partnerships are broad, the strategic focus of CBS Maritime is to build a strong internal “core network” of maritime-focused social science scholars. The collaboration between the Department of Operations Management and the Department of Strategy and Innovation is central to this ambition. By aligning complementary expertise in operations, strategy, innovation, and global shipping, the partnership strengthens our ability to pursue high-impact research, develop coherent teaching programmes, and support a vibrant PhD environment. This internal alliance provides the foundation for coordinated activities, joint project development, and a unified academic platform that advances CBS’s maritime agenda and positions the centre for long-term growth.
Business Partnerships
To ensure that our work remains relevant to the global maritime community, we prioritise applied research and cultivate strong relationships with maritime firms, organisations, and public authorities. As the shipping industry has evolved from a traditionally closed sector to one that actively supports independent, practice-oriented research, we have expanded our engagement accordingly. We maintain structured “dialogue partnerships” with key industry players and draw on a broadly represented advisory board with members from the Danish and international maritime sectors. Together, these collaborations provide strategic insight, enhance the impact of our research, and strengthen the connection between academia and the maritime industry.

Research (Panel content)
Research at CBS Maritime
Research at CBS Maritime is organised into a number of interacting projects. All projects relate to the relationship between maritime industry dynamics and increasing global integration, but each project has its own outline and sub-projects.
Some projects are funded by the EU 7th Framework Program (FP7), the Joint Committee for Nordic Research Councils for the Humanities and the Social Sciences (NOS-HS), Canada’s Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC), the Danish Maritime Fund, DS-Orient’s Fund, and the Lauritzen Foundation.
Organizational Innovation in Shipping, Ports and Maritime Industry
The need for shipping business innovation is widely recognised in maritime industries and among policy-makers. Research points to a predominating technology bias, where new products, services and production technologies receive most attention, while organisation-oriented innovations receive less.
Research on organisational innovation shows that this type of innovation often separates successful companies from less successful companies over time. CBS Maritime investigates strategy innovation—defined as the capacity to reconceive existing business models—together with management innovation, which includes new management processes, tools and organisational structures.
The initiative is co-funded by DS-Orient’s Fund and includes several individual projects covering strategy and management innovation across shipping, ports and maritime equipment suppliers.
For further information, please contact Associate Professor Henrik Sornn-Friese.
Green Shipping: Governance and Innovation in the Maritime Supply Chain
Green Shipping: Governance and Innovation in the Maritime Supply Chain Research on green shipping examines the factors that drive environmental sustainability in the maritime supply chain. Key questions include why responses vary across actors, how sustainable shipping policies influence the sector, and how policy coherence can strengthen competitiveness, innovation and implementation.
The project explores five related themes:
- Trade & Logistics Governance
- Green Port Governance
- Corporate Governance
- Stakeholder Governance
- Value Chain Governance
The project is funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and brings together economists, management scholars and political scientists. Partners from industry and government also participate.
Academic partners include institutions such as Copenhagen Business School, UBC Sauder School of Business, Dalhousie University, Dalian Maritime University, Kedge Business School, Norwegian School of Economics, and others across North America, Europe and Asia.
Industry and government partners include organisations such as BSR/Clean Cargo Working Group, Danish Shipowners’ Association, Fednav Limited, Green Marine, Maersk Line, RightShip, Seaspan Ship Management Ltd., Teck Resources Limited, and Transport Canada.
For further information please contact Associate Professor Henrik Sornn-Friese. For a broader reflection on the project, please read the HRAS interview with Henrik Sornn-Friese.
Blue INNOship — Servitization
Project background
The maritime industry is experiencing increased commoditisation, where marine equipment products become more similar due to global competition. Both equipment suppliers and shipowners face challenges related to a price-focused business model that emphasises minimising cost and squeezing price tags.
Servitization is explored as a way to strengthen competitiveness. This involves adding value-added services to products and developing more advanced, contract-based pricing, cost and profit schemes.
Project highlights The project investigates three central areas:
- Price and cost — Developing pricing and cost-management competences among suppliers and supporting shipowners in strategic selection.
- Contracts — Generating knowledge on how contracts support long-term collaboration and innovation.
- Financing — Understanding how scale, profitability and financing interact in servitized solutions.
Project activities
Open seminars bring together project participants, industry partners and universities to discuss key themes and their relevance to the sector.
Bilateral dialogues with industry partners identify practices, challenges, cases and potential solutions.
Thematic studies summarise findings and offer theoretical guidance and practical insights.
A final conference presents conclusions from the thematic studies.
Practical information
This material forms part of the ongoing research activities on pricing, cost, contracts and financing
in Danish maritime equipment manufacturing. The project is part of the Blue INNOship programme and supported by Innovation Fund Denmark and the Danish Maritime Fund.
For further information, please contact Associate Professor Liping Jiang or Head of Department Carsten Ørts Hansen.
Competitive Challenges and Strategic Development Potential in Global Maritime Industries
Research in this area examines how maritime companies can manage risks and costs as they adapt strategies and organisations to new global opportunities. The aim is to identify how companies can achieve long-term competitive advantages.
In 2014, CBS Maritime launched a research programme supported by the Danish Maritime Fund to address these questions. The programme includes seven PhD projects and five shorter mapping projects, each involving dialogue with industry partners.
For further information, view the CBS Maritime news section or contact Carsten Ørts Hansen
The Dynamics of Maritime Clusters
Research explores how maritime clusters can be described, what distinguishes different clusters, and what keeps them in motion. One study analysed labour mobility among seafarers and shore-based shipping professionals in Denmark from 1992–2006. The aim was to understand how maritime labour flows across the sector and contributes to Denmark as a maritime nation.
Key findings were published in Landlubbers and Sea Dogs (CBS Press and NFS, 2012) and in a shorter paper on maritime labour mobility. The study formed part of a larger project on tax incentives, framework conditions and industrial dynamics in the Blue Denmark.
The Sources of Maritime Leadership
Research in this area investigates how Danish shipping companies have leveraged global opportunities since the mid-1990s and achieved maritime leadership. Studies consider firm-level capabilities, national comparative advantages and sector-level mechanisms, as well as the international dimension.
A key article—"Incentives, Capability and Opportunity" (2011)—argues that Danish maritime success can be explained by integrating these factors. The Danish Maritime Fund has reprinted the article alongside commentaries.
The Entrepreneurship Dynamics of a Nomadic Workforce
This line of research examines entrepreneurship among ex-seafarers, including how life at sea influences job changes, company formation and settlement choices. A PhD thesis from 2013, Co-worker Influence and Labor Mobility, shows that social relationships formed on board ships significantly shape later career paths.
Nordic Shipping in a Global Context
Research explores whether a distinct Nordic shipping model exists and how shipping has developed across the Nordic countries. This collaborative project involved researchers from Denmark, Norway, Sweden and Finland, and resulted in the book Global Shipping in Small Nations (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2012).
The project was co-funded by the Joint Committee for Nordic Research Councils for the Humanities and the Social Sciences (NOS-HS).
The Climate Challenge for Shipping
Climate change represents a major challenge for global society and for the shipping industry. Although shipping is energy-efficient, emissions are expected to rise if current practices continue.
Research examines barriers to energy-efficient shipping and how incentives influence CO₂ emissions. The project also considers how climate challenges can be transformed into competitive advantages.
A 2015 report summarises the key findings of the Research Project on Energy Efficiency in Shipping.

Download Reports and Tools
CBS Maritime provides access to a wide range of reports, tools and research outputs developed through collaborative projects across the maritime sector.
The material below offers insights into key themes in maritime research and includes practical tools created to support industry analysis and decision-making.
Arctic Shipping — Commercial Opportunities and Challenges
The Arctic Ocean has experienced a rapid decline in sea ice extent and volume, driven by rising global temperatures. This development has opened previously inaccessible shipping lanes and enabled access to major offshore fossil fuel reserves.
Growing maritime activity in the Arctic makes it important to assess what these environmental changes mean for Denmark and its maritime industry.
The Report
The report examines the challenges and opportunities linked to an increasingly accessible Arctic Ocean. The analysis builds on past literature and economic theory and focuses on future prospects for liner, bulk, offshore and cruise shipping.
A quantitative assessment is included to estimate when large-scale Arctic traffic may become viable if the decline in ice cover continues.
Online Calculation Tool
The online calculation tool supports the quantitative analysis by allowing users to input vessel specifications and environmental and economic parameters. The model evaluates the feasibility of transporting containerized cargo along the Northern Sea Route.
The tool also estimates when an ice-reinforced vessel operating partly on the NSR may become favorable compared to a conventional ship operating solely on the SCR.

Ports as Energy Transition Hubs: An Exploratory Study
Ports are beginning to take on new roles in the clean energy transition. This development makes it important to examine how ports can contribute to and benefit from wider changes in energy systems.
The Report
The report offers a transdisciplinary exploration of ports as hubs for the clean energy transition. The analysis identifies knowledge gaps, key challenges and emerging problems, and formulates ideas and approaches for addressing them.
The report aims to generate preliminary evidence that can support further research and inform strategic planning for ports seeking to engage actively in the clean energy transition.

Ownership, Finance and Strategy in the Segment of Product Tankers
The product tanker segment is part of a highly cyclical shipping industry closely linked to world trade and global economic conditions. This segment is fragmented, volatile and financially exposed because long-term investments must be made on the basis of short-term forecasts.
The industry’s vulnerability becomes particularly clear during unexpected financial crises. Developments can be understood through three chronological phases: the global growth boom, the financial crisis and the post-crisis period including the industry's current situation.
The Report
The report maps changes in financing methods, ownership structures and strategic approaches in the Danish product tanker segment. The analysis draws on qualitative sources, including scientific literature and maritime publications.
The study examines five major Danish product tanker companies with different financing models to understand how financing, strategy and ownership are connected. The timeframe covers developments from 2004 to 2014, supported by interviews that provide insights into company practices and decision-making.

Value Creation in the Maritime Chain of Transportation
The maritime chain of transportation is driven by the need to move cargo between locations with excess supply and locations with excess demand. Transport is therefore a derived demand, and carriers and service providers must create and extract value from this movement. Existing literature has paid limited attention to how value is created, particularly by agents in the chain.
The Report
The report presents initial insights from a broader mapping project on value creation logics in the maritime value chain. The analysis explains the roles of different actors and examines how they contribute to value creation.
The findings draw on interviews with key players in the maritime chain of transportation, combined with insights from the existing shipping literature.

Offshore Supply Industry Dynamics
Full title: Offshore Supply Industry Dynamics: The Main Drivers in the Energy Sector and the Value Chain Characteristics for Offshore Oil and Gas and Offshore Wind
The offshore sector has become an increasingly important energy source. New offshore hydrocarbon discoveries and the rapid global expansion of offshore wind have strengthened the sector’s significance.
The offshore supply industry is often grouped with the general marine supply industry, yet the value chains for offshore oil, gas and wind differ in important ways. Understanding these differences is essential for analyzing how the sector operates.
The Report
The report examines how the value chains for offshore oil, gas and offshore wind differ from the broader maritime supply industry. The analysis applies a process model approach to identify key drivers in the energy sector and the characteristics of the relevant value chains.

Offshore Supply Industry Dynamics
Fuld titel: Offshore Supply Industry Dynamics: Business Strategies in the Offshore Supply Industry
The offshore supply industry consists of multiple markets with different characteristics. These differences shape how companies position themselves in offshore oil, gas and wind. The diversity of the sector is reflected in segments such as offshore drilling contractors, offshore wind turbine installation, stand-by services, offshore wind logistics and manufacturers of pumps and pumping solutions.
The Report
This report examines five offshore markets to highlight their competitive forces and value chain characteristics. It also analyses how six Danish offshore suppliers — Maersk Drilling, A2SEA, Esvagt, World Marine Offshore, Iron Pump and DESMI Pumping Technology — have positioned themselves in these markets. The findings are based on interviews with top management combined with insights from the management literature.

Navigating ECA-Zones: Regulation and Decision-Making
Regulation in international shipping often has a major impact on the operations of firms and on the development of the shipping industry. Recent developments regarding energy efficiency, ballast water management and air pollution affect the entire maritime supply chain. Air pollution in Northern Europe has been a particularly contentious issue. New rules concerning Sulphur emissions took effect in the Baltic and North Sea in 2015, but little knowledge existed about how this regulation affects shipowners.
The Report
This report analyses the effects of Sulphur regulation in the Baltic and North Sea. The analysis shows that several factors influence which compliance strategy vessels choose. Three factors are identified as the most crucial: the price spread between marine gas oil and heavy fuel oil, the age of the vessel and the time spent sailing in the SECA area.
The report shows that compliance options vary. Investments in scrubbers or LNG are favourable for vessels operating most of the time in the SECA, while switching to marine gas oil is favourable for vessels operating only a minority of the time in the SECA. The underlying factor behind these relationships is the global oil price, which affects fuel prices but not retrofit or LNG investment costs.
ECA Zone Calculation Tool
The ECA Zone Optimal Fuel Retrofit Strategy Tool was developed in conjunction with the report. The tool allows users to insert vessel and route specifications to estimate the costs of four different fuel or retrofit strategies under the enhanced Sulphur regulations.

Pricing Strategy for the Marine Supplies Industry
Pricing is one of the most important elements in business, as every activity in a company works to justify the value behind a price and convert it into profit. Pricing therefore has a dramatic but often underappreciated effect on profitability. Sustaining long-term growth requires marine suppliers to define pricing strategies in a holistic way.
Pricing remains under-managed in many companies. When moving towards servitization, services or integrated solutions are often underpriced or promised at performance levels that cannot be delivered profitably.
The Report
The report argues that the marine supplies industry needs radical change in pricing by focusing on customer needs and aligning incentives between suppliers and customers for long-term relationships. Value-based pricing is presented as the way forward. The report discusses key challenges in applying value-based pricing and how these challenges may be addressed.

Target Costing as a Strategic Tool to Commercialize the Product and Service Innovation
Innovation is a key factor for success in today’s competitive marketplace. With strong international competition and rapid technological change, the ability to introduce innovations into the market and capture the resulting profits is strategically important.
The Report
The report explains how the implementation of target costing increases the likelihood of commercial success for an innovation. Target costing focuses on market conditions and customer needs during the design and price-setting stages. This approach sets cost-reduction targets within the organisation and supports cost-effective design and internal operations.

Pricing of Marine Products and Services in the Modular Age
Appropriate pricing of product-and-service combinations can have a broad impact on business performance. It can boost sales and revenue by differentiating customer preferences across offerings, reduce transaction costs and strengthen competitiveness. Customer satisfaction and loyalty can also increase when pricing better reflects customer needs.
Pricing is particularly challenging for marine suppliers offering multiple products and services, especially when aiming to address specific customer requirements while maintaining pricing efficiency.
The Report
The report explains how pricing challenges can be addressed by applying the modular concept to pricing. Each product or service is offered as a separate module, allowing individual pricing or bundled pricing. This approach helps balance customization and standardization and creates the potential for a win-win situation.

Cruising Digitalization — A Study of the Governance Framework for Cybersecurity in the Danish Maritime Shipping Industry
The report discusses the roles of technology, regulation and self-regulatory schemes in building a governance framework to ensure cybersecurity within maritime shipping. It departs from the question of whether it makes sense to regulate cybersecurity at the industry level, considering that shipping organisations themselves are the main beneficiaries of cyber hygiene or cyber resilience.
In exploring these and related questions, the study draws on reports, applicable regulation and policies at national and supranational levels. It also builds on interviews with key stakeholders in the Danish shipping industry and participation in relevant events.

Creating Circular Economy Clusters for Sustainable Ship Recycling in Denmark
With the tightening of international ship recycling regulation — including the EU Ship Recycling Regulation, the adoption of the Basel Convention Ban Amendment and the pending adoption of the Hong Kong Convention — a general upgrading of global ship recycling is expected. These developments may reduce the cost advantages historically enjoyed by facilities in South Asia and create new conditions for ship recycling in Europe.
The move towards a circular economy, reflected in Danish and European policies and regulation, could support a strong business case for European ship recycling facilities and maritime suppliers able to meet strengthened environmental and safety requirements.
The Report
The report summarises and discusses initial project results regarding the future prospects for a circular business ecosystem for end-of-life shipping assets in Denmark, including the potential for Danish ship recycling yards and the maritime industry. It addresses questions related to:
- the size and composition of the near-end-of-life fleet
- the structure and capabilities of the Danish yards and maritime industry
- analysis of the market for ship recycling in Denmark
- circular business models and remanufacturing in the marine equipment industry
