Generally, the course list is published:

Until your course list is available, you can be inspired by the one from the previous autumn if you are coming in the autumn, and for the spring if you are coming in the spring.

Before choosing your courses
Inspiration from previous courses
Until the courses are published, you may be inspired by the course offers from the previous corresponding spring or autumn semester.
There are always a few changes in our course offer from one year to the next, but the majority of the courses are usually repeated.
ECTS and number of classes
You must be a full-time student
At CBS, the workload for a full-time student is 30 ECTS per semester.
Your student visa and/or residence permit is granted upon your status as a full-time student. Thus, you are required to register for 30 ECTS.
If you do not intent to meet this requirement, you should reconsider your participation in the exchange programme at CBS.
ECTS
You can find the number of ECTS for each course in the course list.
Credits are based on the total workload required from a student. This includes both in-class participation (lectures etc.) and out-of-class preparation, The workload is calculated at 27.5 student work hours per ECTS credit.
Number of classes
The number of lectures/classes for a course varies greatly.
It is general CBS policy that a 7.5 ECTS course has:
- at undergraduate level minimum 38 lessons.
- at graduate level minimum 30 lessons.
Contact hours
For the partner universities that transfer credits based on the number of contact hours, please note that we cannot issue or sign any official document certifying the number of contact hours for you.
The exact number of contact hours for the individual course is stated in the course description under Student workload.
Credit transfer and pre-approval
Apply for pre-approval for more courses
We recommend that you apply for pre-approval of credit transfer for more courses than you need.
Courses might be oversubscribed due to too many applicants or not be established due to too few applicants.
Course schedules might also overlap, or you might simply find that a course is not as relevant to your academic focus as you thought.
New preapproval takes time
if you have to obtain pre-approval for a new course, it could seriously delay your course application process.
You should apply for pre-approval for at least all your primary and all alternative course choices.
Contact your home university for information on how to apply for pre-approval.
Balancing your workload
At CBS, we have full semester courses and quarter courses.
Quarter courses
Quarter courses are typically twice as intensive as semester courses, as the same amount of teaching and learning takes place in about half as much time.
We advise against taking more than two quarter courses in the same quarter:
Autumn semester:
- max. two 1st quarter courses and
- max. two 2nd quarter courses
Spring semester:
- max. two 3rd quarter courses and
- max. two 4th quarter courses
Combining quarter courses with semester courses is fine.
Course overloading
Only if required
A normal semester workload is 30 ECTS, and it is only permitted to course overload if it is required by your university and if it is absolutely necessary. We cannot guarantee that it will be possible.
Please also note:
- We cannot allow more than 37.5 ECTS.
- Undergraduate students cannot sign up for more than 30 ECTS in the spring semester.
How to course overload
Along with your course application you must upload a letter from your university explaining why it is necessary for you to take more than 30 ECTS.
Course: Danish Integrated Skills
If you wish to take the course Danish - Integrated Skills (course code: BINBV1106U) as an extra course, you do not need to upload a letter from your university in your course application form about the need to exceed 30 ECTS.
Be aware that you cannot drop the course after the add/drop period is over, and the exam result will appear on your transcript.
Courses in Danish
Some elective courses are offered in Danish.
If you are an exchange student who understands Danish, you can choose these courses.
You can do the exam in these courses in Swedish or Norwegian.
You will not find these courses on the course lists for exchange students. You will find the on the list of all courses offered as electives at CBS, please see:
If you would like to apply for an elective course taught in Danish, please contact us via the Inbound Helpdesk (or inboundexchange@cbs.dk if you still do not have a CBS login).
Undergraduate student and graduate courses
If you are an undergraduate student and have not yet obtained your bachelor’s degree, you do not fulfil the prerequisites for a graduate level course.
Exception
We understand that sometimes you cannot fulfil your course requirements to your home university with only the courses we offer on undergraduate level.
In this case, we may allow undergraduate students to enrol in one graduate level elective course.
Specific information about what to do and when will be included in the detailed information about course application you will receive after having sent us your formal application for exchange.
CEMS and double degree
CEMS and double degree students should follow any special CEMS or double degree requirements or restrictions as instructed in the email you will receive to your CBS mail. Look out for one entitled 'CBS course application is now open'.
Special exchange programmes
CBS has a number of specialised exchange programmes between specific CBS' programmes and partner universities around the world.
Such exchange students must take specific CBS courses and in some cases also one or more electives.
You will receive detailed information in your CBS email about course registration or application in the specific programme you are part of.
MBA courses
MBA courses at CBS are not available to graduate exchange students. This is due to the lock-step structure of the MBA programmes at CBS. If you're an MBA student coming to CBS on exchange, you have access to graduate level courses.
Letter of priority
What is a letter of priority?
A letter of priority will give you priority for registration to CBS courses if failure to attend a certain course will:
- delay your graduation
- hinder you to be accepted into a specific master programme
- exclude you from receiving a scholarship (the name of the scholarship must be stated).
How to get a letter of priority
Ask your home university to write or sign a letter of priority worded by yourself.
The letter must include:
- the full code
- the title of the course(s) in question
- why it is vital to you.
Due to course availability, CBS cannot approve reasons such as:
- academic goals
- professional aspirations
- your wanting a specific academic profile
How to apply
If you upload a letter of priority when you apply for courses, you will be prioritised for courses which might otherwise be oversubscribed.
This only applies if the letter fulfils our requirements and if we accept the reason stated in the letter.
A letter of priority does not mean that we can guarantee that you get the course.
After initial registration, seats are predistributed and letters of priority can no longer be accommodated.
Limited priority in the spring semester
We cannot give priority to more than two undergraduate courses in the spring semester.
Period of attendance - what to expect
When considering spending a semester in Copenhagen, you might be wondering how a semester in Copenhagen will impact any other obligations you might have, for instance an internship.
We hope that the following information will give you a better overview.
Week numbers
In Denmark we often use week numbers to refer to certain periods of time. So you will need to get used to using week numbers when planning your exchange stay.
Arrive 1-2 weeks before semester start
You must arrive 1-2 weeks before the semester starts for the welcome programme.

Exams in January?
Almost all our exchange students go home before Christmas, so if you have an exam in January it will require planning on your part.
If you are worried about having to be present in Copenhagen for an exam in January, please consider:
- 2nd quarter exams normally take place in January
- If the exam is a home-assignment, you only need internet access to attende and do not need to be in Denmark.
- If the exam is an on-campus exam (written sit-in exam or oral exam), you may need to stay in Denmark over Christmas and New Years - or come back for your exam
- The exam dates are announced while it is still possible to make course changes. So if you find that you have an exam which requires your presence in Denmark in January, you still have the chance to change your course.
Housing in January
If you are allocated to a room in one of our student dorms, you must move out by the end of December.
The rental period is fixed and cannot be extended regardless of exam dates and wish to stay until the end of January, as rooms must be prepared for the next students.
Exams in June?
30 June is the last official date of the semester. If you are worried about this due to internship plans or if you are due to graduate, we hope that the following information will put your mind at ease:
- If the exam is a home-assignment, you only need internet access to attende and do not need to be in Denmark.
- If the exam is an on-campus exam (written sit-in exam or oral exam), you may need to stay in Denmark or come back for your exam.
- The exam dates are announced while it is still possible to make course changes. So if you find that you have an exam which requires your presence in Denmark in June, you still have the chance to change your course.
Housing in June
If you are allocated to a room in one of our student dorms, you must move out by mid June. The specific date varies slightly from one year to the next and date will be announced to students as soon as possible.
The rental period is fixed and cannot be extended regardless of exam dates and wish to stay until the end of January, as rooms must be prepared for the next students.
Flexibility from your university
Your university and their course transfer policies are important. If they have given you the freedom to choose any course you want during your exchange, you will have greater possibilities for changing courses and in this way creating a course and exam schedule which is perfect for you.
If your university approves only a limited number of our courses for credit transfer, you will have less flexibility.
Due to graduate?
Exams may no be graded until August
If you are due to graduate shortly after completing your exchange period with us, you should know that exams that took place in June might not be graded before August.
The grades are released no later than one month after the exam took place, but the month of July is considered holiday and will in some cases prolong the procedure.
