Supplementary courses for master admission

Here you can read about what applies if you want to take single courses to meet the entry requirements for a master programme.

Do you need to supplement courses?

Check whether you fulfil the academic requirements

You must always fulfil the entry requirements for the master programmes you want to apply for.

Find the entry requirements for the master programmes and check whether you fulfil them under Application and admission.

If you do not fulfil the academic requirements

You may be able to fulfil the academic requirements for a master programme by taking elective or supplementary courses.

The difference is:

  • Elective courses are courses that are part of your bachelor programme
  • Supplementary courses are courses you take in addition to your bachelor programme to fulfil the academic requirements

If possible, we recommend that you use elective courses to fulfil the academic requirements. Elective courses that are part of your Danish bachelor programme are free of charge, and not subject to the rules for supplementary courses.

Supplementary rules

If you need to take supplementary courses to fulfil the entry requirements for a master programme, please note the following rules:

  • You may supplement your bachelor degree with a maximum of 30 ECTS.
  • Supplementary courses must be at bachelor level. Courses at master level cannot be used.
  • Supplementary courses must be passed and documented before study start.
  • Supplementary courses may only be taken at specific times.

When can you take supplementary courses?

You can use supplementary courses if they are:

  • Passed before you started your bachelor programme
For instance if you have passed courses as part of a previous bachelor programme that you did not complete.

  • Passed during your bachelor programme
You may take supplementary courses alongside your bachelor programme, but the course must be passed before you complete your bachelor degree.

This means that you can take courses in the autumn or spring semester, as long as the exam in the supplementary course takes place before the final exam of your bachelor programme.
  • Taken after conditional acceptance to a master programme
You are conditionally accepted from the time you receive an answer from CBS Admissions that you have been conditionally accepted and until the start of the programme.

If you have been conditionally accepted, you may take supplementary courses in June, July and August. The courses must be completed and documented no later than 31 August.

When can you not take supplementary courses?

You cannot use courses that are:

  • taken after you have completed your bachelor degree but before you have received a decision on conditional acceptance to a master programme.

If you complete your bachelor degree in December, you cannot take a course in the spring semester as a supplementary course - even if the exam takes place in June, July or August.

Remember to declare your course enrolment

If you plan to take a supplementary course, you must state this in the Application Portal when you apply for the master prgoramme. Read more about how to document your enrolment in the Application Portal.

How to find courses

You can take supplementary courses at CBS in the spring or autumn semester, as long as the exam in the supplementary course takes place before the final exam of your bachelor programme.

Find the academic areas and ECTS you are missing

Supplementary courses must be at bachelor level and cover the academic areas and number of ECTS you are missing in order to fulfil the entry requirements. If you e.g. are missing 1.5 ECTS in Finance, you must choose a course worth at least 1.5 ECTS in Finance.

A course can cover more than one academic area, but only up to the number of ECTS the course is worth. A 7.5 ECTS course may e.g. cover 3 ECTS in Finance and 4.5 ECTS in Business Administration. However, the same course cannot count twice and therefore cover both 7.5 ECTS in Finance and 7.5 Business Administration.

You can see which academic areas and how many ECTS a course covers in the course overview and the course description. Use the filters ECTS and Academic areas for master admission to find relevant courses by clicking on the link below.
