What is Web of Science?

Web of Science (WoS) gives you access to articles from recognised journals within social sciences, natural sciences and the humanities, with social sciences most prominently represented.

References come from several publication types. Journal articles are most common, but conference papers and books are also included. You find peer-reviewed literature and can identify the researchers and articles that are cited the most. This makes WoS a strong tool when you want to explore how research influences and inspires others.

WoS consists of several citation indexes that you can search individually or simultaneously:

  • Social Science Citation Index
Approx. 26,003,500 social science journals from 4,755 disciplines from 1900-

  • Science Citation Index Expanded
Approx. 9,400 journals covering interdisciplinary material from 182 scientific categories from 1900-
Approx. 3,700 natural and technical science journals from 100 disciplines from 1956-

  • Arts & Humanities Citation Index
Approx. 1,390–1,800 humanities journals from 1975-

  • Conference Proceedings Citation Index
A newer index under Web of Science that provides access to conference proceedings within natural sciences, humanities and social sciences from 1990-

When is Web of Science useful?

Use WoS when you want to:

  • carry out citation analysis of researchers or articles
  • find articles within social sciences, natural sciences or the humanities
  • see who cites whom
  • search by references or citations and follow how research is cited and evolves over time

WoS helps you identify the most cited and influential research within a field.
