Course content

This course consists of a group project and of classes addressing issues typically encountered in health care innovation projects in companies, start-ups or in the health care provider organisations. Examples of these issues are concerned with innovation design, needs analysis, development of value propositions, markets and pricing of medical products, or issues in organizational implementation of innovation.

Organised into groups, students focus on a specific innovation challenge in a specific company or health provider organization The project group carries out field work in its host organization to obtain the most fruitful problem statement, to collect data, and to present and discuss solutions. This type of project, referred to as Industry Hosted Projects, require a substantial effort from all project members in terms of coordinating and collaborating with the host company within normal work hours

Groups unable to meet these requirements instead write a project on an issue in health care innovation based on literature and existing cases. These will be referred to as Literature-based Projects. They require the same workload as do Industry Hosted Projects, but they offer students more flexibility in terms of carrying out their project work.

What you will learn

Learning objectives for Projects:

Demonstrate ability to contribute to problem solving in a specific innovation pursued by the host organization or by a health care related organisation. This contribution may focus on aspects of the specific innovation as a whole.
Demonstrate ability to transform an innovation challenge experienced by a host organization or by a health care related organisation into a problem formulation lending itself to rigorous analysis and use of existing academic literature.
Demonstrate ability to conduct collection and analysis of data inside and outside the host organization and/or health care related organisations, using relevant methodologies, and demonstrating an understanding of the potentials and limitations of those methodologies
Being able to present clear recommendations that the host organization or the health care related organisation can implement and to reflect on the implications and applicability of your conclusions.
Being able to apply the relevant tools, concepts and theories acquired in courses from the first year of MSc IHC.

Course prerequisites

If the number of students outnumbers the number of places for external collaborations, students will be given the possibility to write a literature based project. If a student has not passed the four first semester courses before the start of the second semester innovation project the study programme reserves the right to cancel the collaboration. The student can instead write a literature based project.
