Thursday, November 11, 2010 - 13:00 to 15:00

Public Lecture by Professor Romain Laufer, HEC Paris

Oliver Wendell Holmes, a member of the Metaphysical Club who was to become one of the most famous United States Supreme Court Justice, wrote:

“But although practical men generally prefer to leave their major premises inarticulate, yet even for practical purposes, theory generally turns out the most important thing in the end.”

The lecture of Professor Romain Laufer is based on his work on management and marketing from a philosophical and political perspective. The presentation will try to show how such a theory may allow to link rigorously politics and management and to understand the growing importance of aesthetics in the development of economic and social actions.

Professor Laufer has introduced these topics in both his research and teaching in the context of CEMS where CBS students have had an opportunity to join in. By connecting management to philosophy professor Laufer, active in the College International de Philosophie, has both contributed to marketing theory but also to the study of public management and marketing in its relations to paradigms and ideologies. His work thus fits the interests of the MPP department but also those of departments of marketing, organization and business policy.

Romain Laufer is Professor of Marketing at HEC-Paris. BA in economics Paris University, M.A. and PhD Cornell University. He teaches services marketing, institutional communication, the management of major risks as well as the philosophical and social foundations of management.

His research has be devoted to the development of a multidisciplinary approach of management based on the notions of “system of legitimacy” and of “history of systems of legitimacy”. Its purpose was to articulate in a rigorous manner marketing, management, social sciences and philosophy.

This approach has been developed through time in many publications articles and books such as : Management Public : Gestion et Légitimité (Dalloz 1980) ,Marketing Democracy Public Opinion and Media formation in Democratic societies (transaction Books 1990),L'Entreprise face aux Risques Majeurs : à propos de l'incertitude des normes sociales (L'Harmattan 1993), Les Nouvelles Fondations de la Gestion :Eléments d'épistémologie de la recherche en management (Vuibert 2001), Le Libéralisme l'Innovation et la Question des Limites (L'Harmattan 2003).

He is co-editor of Politiques et Management Public (PMP), Member of the Review Board of Recherche et Application en Marketing (RAM) and Consumer market and Culture (CMC). He is a member of the scientific council of the College international de Philosophie (CIPh).
