The New Organization Design

As an academic field, Organization Design began coalescing around Max Weber’s time, though its roots go much further back (think of Plato’s Republic). Historically it has been a rather cold and abstract area, filled with organizational charts, descriptions of organizational arrangements, contingent do’s and don’ts, and distanced computation.

It was popular up until the early 80’s, when people thought that it could become the holy grail for managing. But it’s colourlessness and lack of a practical track record resulted in its being displaced by more engaging fields; e.g., Organizational Culture, Strategic Management, and even Population Ecology.

Thirty years later, Organization Design seems to be rising from the dead. While it previously used the word “design” to denote structuralist recipes, these days it is turning to the more tangible, experimental, creational design fields; e.g. fashion, auto, software, graphics, experiential, social, and strategic design. With this is coming a radical shift in organizational design thinking, paving the way towards a warmer, livelier, and more engaging field In his talk, Daved Barry will briefly expand on some of the above points and then turn to how Organization Design could work if it starts to incorporate the sensory, aesthetic, artful, and creative sides of design.
