What is World Bank Open Data?

World Bank Open Data is the World Bank’s freely accessible database containing economic, social and demographic data for countries worldwide. The platform covers topics such as economic growth, poverty, education, health, trade, environment, energy and population, and makes it possible to track global economic developments over time. View data as tables, charts or maps and export for further analysis.

World Bank Open Data provides access to macroeconomic data as well as a very wide range of development, sociological and health-related indicators for all countries. The most important data are collected in the World Development Indicators (WDI).

World Development Indicators 

The database contains approx. 1,600 different time series for 220 countries/economies, many of which go back more than 50 years. They are organised into several Data Themes:

  • Poverty and Inequality (income distribution, etc.)
  • People (population, education, labour, health, gender, etc.)
  • Environment (climate change, energy, biodiversity, sanitation, etc.)
  • Economy (growth, income and savings, trade, etc.)
  • States and Markets (business environment, stock markets, infrastructure, etc.)
  • Global Links (debt, trade, aid dependency, refugees, tourism, migration, etc.)
