What is Scite?

Scite is a research tool designed to help find, analyse, and understand connections in scientific literature effectively. It gives you a quick overview of a research field.

Instead of simply showing how many times an article is cited, Scite shows how it is cited – for example, whether it is supported, contradicted or merely mentioned in other studies.

The platform is powered by artificial intelligence and analyses millions of academic publications to provide context around citations and research claims. Scite builds on research literature from both open access sources and subscription content.

Scite has two main areas:

  1. Smart Citations show the context of each citation and indicate whether the citing article provides supporting or contrasting evidence.

  2. The Research Assistant allows you to ask questions in natural language and receive answers drawn from research articles.

How does Smart Citation work?

  • It analyses citations in academic papers and the context in which they appear.
  • From a starting article, you can explore how and where it has been cited.
  • It shows whether citing papers agree, disagree, or are neutral toward the seed paper.

Tailored to your needs

Scite collaborates with major academic publishers for deeper insight and goes beyond open access and abstracts.

  • You can define journal sets and year ranges for tailored searches.
  • The AI assistant builds answers based on your defined sources and criteria.

When is Scite useful?

Scite is particularly helpful when you:

  • want to assess the quality and credibility of a scientific article
  • want to understand the research debate around a topic
  • want to see how findings are discussed in the literature
