What is PhilPapers?

PhilPapers is a comprehensive online database and research portal for philosophy, developed by university-based philosophers in the 2000s. It brings together metadata, abstracts and articles from thousands of academic journals, books, working papers and open access sources.

PhilPapers is the largest archive within philosophy, and the content is searchable as free text or through the subject categories on the front page. Some material is available in full text, but not all of it. The platform contains more than 2.7 million records and is updated continuously.

When is PhilPapers useful?

PhilPapers is a valuable tool for students and researchers who want to:

  • Find and follow the newest research within all branches of philosophy
  • Search systematically for articles, authors or topics within a very detailed subject structure
