Value generation in data ecosystems

“Data has become a key economic resource in today’s digitally driven world. However, its mere availability does not automatically generate value. Value emerges through sociotechnical arrangements that allow data to circulate, be interpreted, recombined, governed, and transformed into useful offerings. Accordingly, data ecosystems have become important across industries and a growing focus of academic research. Yet, the literature remains fragmented, with unclear definitions, components, and explanations of how data is converted into value. This thesis addresses this gap through four studies examining data ecosystem subsystems. Using sociotechnical systems theory, the thesis synthesizes these findings into a value generation framework that explains how actors identify their control zone, design business models, mobilize data and relationships, and adjust their role and control zone based on realized outcomes. The thesis contributes to IS research by strengthening the conceptual foundations of data ecosystems.”
