Can I Say That?

The debate about diversity and inclusion has become more polarized. Many are unsure of what to say and how to say it. Dr. Poornima Luthra tells us how we can shift the conversation from defense to dialogue. Based on her new book, she offers concrete perspectives on how courage and humility can pave the way for real change.

About the event

In this talk, drawing on insights from her latest book Can I Say That?, Dr. Poornima Luthra explores the growing backlash and resistance to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Her research shows that much of this resistance is not rooted in opposition to fairness itself, but in fear - fear of saying the wrong thing, being judged, losing status, or getting it wrong in public.

Rather than framing DEI as a battleground, she reframes it as an invitation: to move beyond defensiveness, and build the courage and humility required for real progress. The talk offers a thoughtful and practical lens on what is holding us back, and what it will take to move forward.

Executive DEI Advisor Sofie Gottlieb will join Poornima Luhra in conversation.

Dr. Poornima Luthra, Senior Faculty at Imperial Business School and external faculty at CBS, is a globally recognized author, keynote speaker, and DEI expert. She has written four acclaimed books, including Can I Say That? (2025) and The Art of Active Allyship (2022). Ranked among Thinkers50’s top 30 emerging management thinkers, her works have twice been named among the year’s 10 best management books.

This event is a part of CBS Library and Academic Services' celebration of CBS research and as such it contributes to the CBS research dissemination efforts.
