Safety of life at sea is the priority
Having worked on oil, gas and chemical tankers for over ten years, Kavi Diwan understands the necessity of tanker safety and now oversees safety aboard 250 vessels as a vetting manager. He chose the Blue MBA to sharpen his analytical skills, gain a wider industry perspective and drive innovation toward a more sustainable future.
Kavi Diwan started his career in shipping in 2002, working on board oil, chemical and gas tankers. After 10 years in the industry, he rose to the master rank in 2012. Three years later, he traded his life at sea with a position in Houston as a vetting and roving superintendent. Since, he has taken on other positions where the central has been on increasing safety aboard tankers and vessels. For him, safety of life at sea is the priority with survival surpassing commercial demands.
He is currently based with Fleet Management as a Manager / Vetting and Quality and Safety. Notable achievements have included Sire planning across the globe, voyage crossing for 125 vessels, as well as implementing Tanker Management and Self-Assessment (TMSA) - an Oil Companies International Marine Forum which reinforces safety provisions for tankers and is determined to continue broadening the focus on safety across the industry.
Collectively, Fleet Management has grown its number of ships from 350 to over 600 and Kavi Diwan has managed operations of five bunkering barges stationed in Mauritius, Qatar, and Dubai among other duties in the field of quality assurance, operations, and vetting. He recognizes that innovation is needed in vessel building as there is great concern on the evolving structure of the bunker sector and bunker quality.
“The best way to cope with the evolving structure of the bunker sector and bunker quality is, in the long run, to build the vessels for clean fuel, which will also help in protecting the environment.” Captain Kavi Diwan
Manager / Vetting, Quality and Safety at Fleet Management Limited, Blue MBA Class of 2023
"Plenty of vessels are being built and run nowadays on methanol and LNG. So, we need to go ahead with cleaner fuel in this cautious and patient manner.”
Kavi Diwan learnt about the Blue MBA from an alum in 2010. Ever since then he was excited about participating in the programme for two reasons. First, the Blue MBA is the only Executive MBA focusing completely on shipping giving him the possibility to share and extend his knowledge in the industry. Second, he really liked the location of CBS in the ‘happiest’ country in the shipping universe. Ten years later he finally took the step and signed up for the Blue MBA. So far, he is very happy with his decision.
For Kavi Diwan the Blue MBA is unique. He says that “the Blue MBA provides a wide vision of shipping starting from chartering, management, logistics, insurance, and law. It’s a holistic view of shipping with extensive research done for the modules, which helps individuals to expand their knowledge of the industry. It gives candidates a different perspective to use their expertise to grapple with the future development of shipping, especially in the power sector where decarbonisation is the major cause of concern. The kind of innovative ideas learned during the courses can help save the environment.”
