Postdoc in Economics of Science and Innovation
Copenhagen Business School invites applications for a two-year postdoc position in the field of Economics of Science and Innovation at the Department of Strategy and Innovation. The expected starting date is earliest possible or 1 December, 2026.
The time-limited (two-year) postdoc position is connected to the research project “The Villum Experiment: Risk, Novelty, and Scientific Trajectories,” lead by Professor H.C. Kongsted, based on a grant from Villum Fonden. The project builds on recent advances in the economics of science and innovation, applying state-of-the-art citation- and text-based measures to capture atypical knowledge recombination, conceptual distance, topic novelty, and uncertainty. The project will mostly rely on econometric analysis of large-scale microdata sets for researchers in Denmark, in particular, high-quality Danish registry data with links to data on researchers’ publications and research funding activities.
The ideal candidate will be a recent PhD graduate with a deep interest in the economics of science. The candidate will be expected to take the lead in collecting, preparing, and analyzing data to support the project. Advanced econometric analysis skills are essential, along with a keen interest in using natural language processing (NLP) methods on large-scale text data. Candidates with substantial experience in NLP and text-based analysis will be particularly well suited to the project. The postdoc will be able to join as a co-author on work packages within the project or to propose their own ideas within its scope. Up to 20 percent of their time can be used for working on their existing research pipeline. There is no teaching obligation associated with this position.
The selected candidate will become part of the Kongsted-Tartari group, a well-established research team based at Copenhagen Business School and the Stockholm School of Economics with a network of collaborating scholars, primarily at European universities. Previous postdocs from the group have gone on to academic positions at well-regarded institutions in Europe and beyond, including Bocconi University and Harvard Business School.
The research group is embedded within the Department of Strategy and Innovation. The department’s research is focused on Strategy, Innovation, Entrepreneurship and International business. The four areas are the pillars the department rests on in its teaching and research activities. The number of staff in the department is approximately 80. This includes about 45 faculty members (professors, associate professors, tenure track assistant professors), 7 administrative staff members, and 30 members of staff who are hired on temporary contracts as research assistants, post docs or PhD students.
The department’s goal is to host an internationally leading environment for research and teaching in strategy, innovation, entrepreneurship, and international business. The theoretical foundation for research in these areas integrates perspectives from several fields, combining strategy and/or internationalization theory with insights from economics, sociology, psychology, and economic geography. Methodologically, the department places considerable emphasis on the solid application of empirical methods, featuring qualitative interview studies, surveys, register data, or experiments.
Qualifications:
- Applicants will have completed a PhD in Management, Economics, or another related social science discipline before the beginning of the position. Candidates who expect to be finishing their PhD within the current academic year will also be considered for the position, but with a later agreed starting date.
- A solid academic record and consistent work ethic are required.
- Well-developed organizational and oral/written communication skills are required.
- Motivation for research is required. The ideal candidate will be thinking of this position as a platform to build skills toward taking on a research professorship in the future.
- Willingness to move to and live in Denmark.
- Working knowledge of econometric software (such as Stata or R) and general programming tools (such as Python) is desirable.
