Through a qualitative study of the Danish Army’s key warfighting unit, 1 Brigade, the project seeks to understand explicitly how and why digitalization transforms decision- making and how this can be leveraged to combat power.
I have a background in the Danish Army with 20 years of experience, including three operational deployments to the Middle East and the Baltic. As Head of Research and Development for Land Military Operations at the Royal Danish Defence College, I have, to name a few, participated in both Danish and NATO working groups, doctrine writing, and educated all levels of enlisted personnel.
My current PhD project focuses on understanding how a complex technology-saturated decision-making system (such as 1 Brigade) can leverage technology to fight and win against a peer adversary. As such, starting from the principle that embracing digital technologies does not necessarily guarantee improved combat power if other factors are not considered, this project aims to understand what enables military forces to utilize digitalization in order to improve combat power.
Effective and efficient exploitation of smart, innovative digital technologies is essential for the planning and conduct of military operations in an increasingly digitalized and data-driven world. Thus, this project will support the digital transformation of the Danish armed forces by guiding digitalization to good decision-making and enhance operational performance.
