What is Datastream?
Datastream is an advanced database from Refinitiv (formerly Thomson Reuters) that provides access to current and historical financial and macroeconomic data from markets across the world. The platform includes time series for equities, interest rates, currencies, commodities, bonds, indices, ESG data and economic indicators for countries and regions.
The content in Datastream is organised in a range of Data Categories. All data extractions begin with selecting the relevant Data Category:
- Equities (prices and financial key figures such as P/E, EPS and more)
- Equity indices (market value, price, turnover and more)
- Unit trusts
- Investment trusts
- Bonds & convertibles
- Bond indices & CDS
- Economics (macroeconomic time series from IMF, OECD, ECB, Eurostat, EIU and national statistical agencies)
- Exchange rates
- Interest rates (Treasury bonds, government bonds and more)
- Commodities
- Derivatives (warrants, futures, options)
When is Datastream useful?
Datastream is an ideal tool for in-depth quantitative research where reliable and comparable historical data are essential. It is relevant if you are working with:
- Financial market analyses and empirical studies
- Macroeconomic research on growth, inflation, employment and international business cycles
- Time series analysis and modelling in Stata, R or Excel
- Projects that combine economic and financial variables from a global perspective
