Digitalization in maritime shipping : TradeLens by Maersk and IBM

I explore the role of digital technologies in organizing collaboration in maritime shipping. Success of complex business ecosystems increasingly relies on collaboration between organizations. My research studies the use of blockchain in container shipping to support collaboration across the entire supply chain, learning from the experience of TradeLens (by Maersk and IBM).

Digitalization in maritime shipping: evidence from U.S. ports

I study the relationship between the use of Just-In-Time (JIT) arrival systems and performance at U.S. container ports. Port congestion and prolonged vessel turnaround time are known issues in many ports, and JIT systems are poised to address it. Despite their promise, JIT arrival systems face significant implementation challenges. I examine this issue empirically using data from U.S. container ports.

I see the potential for digital technologies to improve collaboration between organizations in our complex and interdependent world.

My research studies the role of digital technologies in organizing collaboration in transportation systems, focusing on maritime shipping. While digital technologies have a strong potential to improve collaboration between organizations, technical and behavioural barriers continue to hinder the implementation of new cutting-edge technologies. I study the nature of these barriers and offer ways of overcoming them, learning from the experience of ambitious collaboration initiatives in maritime transportation. 

Transportation is the engine of global, regional and local economies. Improved transportation of people and goods directly impacts the lives and wellbeing of many around the world. With over 80% of the volume of global trade moving by sea, improved maritime shipping has significant implications for consumers, businesses, governments and transportation providers.  

My motivation stems from years of working and developing professional expertise in transportation.  Presently, I study failures and inefficiencies in transportation systems globally, and I am driven by the insatiable thirst for improvement and change.
