Procurement resilience in the era of geopolitical disruptions
On May 19, procurement professionals and researchers took part to the Strategic Procurement Initiative workshop at CBS with the aim to facilitate knowledge sharing between practitioners and academia around the topic of procurement resilience in the era of geopolitical disruptions.
Geopolitical conflicts and tensions, such as the war in Ukraine and the conflict in the Middle East, are catastrophic for those affected and a threat to the global business. In a system that relies on stability in globally dispersed supply chains, geopolitical shocks can disrupt supply chains overnight. In this context, procurement managers are under increasing pressure to respond to sudden supply chain shocks while building resilience.
To address these challenges, the workshop included breakout sessions and World Café discussion in which participants shared their perspectives on key themes of procurement resilience, such as the role of the circular economy in securing resources, how sustainability and circularity are addressed during disruptions, the contribution of digital technologies to procurement resilience, and the importance of supplier collaboration.
The workshop has been organized by Assistant Professor Caterina Trevisan and Professor Kim Sundtoft Hald (CBS), Professor Thomas Johnsen (Audencia Business School) and Associate Professor Philip Beske-Janssen (University of Southern Denmark). It is part of the Strategic Procurement Initiative of the Operations Management department aimed at positioning CBS as a leading European research and teaching hub on strategic procurement - understood as a key lever for resilience, sustainability, and innovation.
