Highlights from the Nordic Household Finance Summit

On June 1-2 2026, the Center for Big Data in Finance (BIGFI) hosted the Nordic Household Finance Summit, bringing together more than 100 participants to discuss the latest research and developments in household finance.

The inaugural summit provided a platform for researchers from universities and financial institutions across Europe and the United States to exchange insights on recent developments within household finance.

The programme focused on empirical research using administrative and registry data, as well as experimental, survey, qualitative, and observational approaches. Across six sessions, participants discussed topics including household borrowing and financial distress, saving and portfolio choice, financial literacy, fintech, behavioural finance, and the role of financial frictions in household decisions.

Presentations covered a wide range of questions related to how households respond to changes in interest rates, credit conditions, financial innovation, and economic uncertainty. The sessions were followed by discussions among presenters, chairs, and invited discussants from institutions including Danmarks Nationalbank, the Bank of England, Rice University, University of Houston, Indiana University, BI Norwegian Business School, Stockholm School of Economics, and the University of Southern California.

The summit was organised by Arna Olafsson (Copenhagen Business School and BIGFI), Andreas Fagereng (BI Norwegian Business School), Elias Rantapuska (Aalto University), Gisle Natvik (BI Norwegian Business School), Marieke Bos (Stockholm School of Economics), Samuli Knüpfer (Aalto University), and Steffen Meyer (Aarhus University).
