A lifelong obsession with knowing, and how emerging technologies transform what and how we know

I am an Assistant Professor at the Copenhagen Business School’s Department of Digitalization. I study how emerging technologies shape organizing in high-stakes public sector environments, drawing primarily on qualitative fieldwork in healthcare settings. I also engage with emerging technologies as a medium of inquiry, developing tools and methods that bridge interpretive and computational approaches to research and reasoning. I teach across undergraduate and graduate levels on subjects related to emerging technologies in organizations, data science and business analytics, and research methods.   

My research and teaching worldview are informed by a PhD in Management from McGill University’s Desautels Faculty of Management and a PhD in Ecology from Emory University’s Graduate Division of Biological and Biomedical Sciences, as well as my time at Accenture US during the formative years of enterprise data science and artificial intelligence, deploying analytics systems and leading data science teams for multiple Fortune 500 clients.

Recent research projects

Knowing "on the fly"

A longitudinal ethnography of a frontline hospital’s crisis command centre during the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. I’m theorizing how in such unprecedented circumstances, where responding often precedes knowing how to respond, coordinating local and emergent responses to multiple local crises requires weaving together unit- and organizational-level knowing.

Knowings That Matter

A comparative ethnography of two public sector hospitals attempting to develop artificial intelligence solutions for the same complex coordination process, concurrently, using the same developer, but producing very different technologies. I’m theorizing how local knowings-in-practice can produce divergent “ground truths” of complex processes and perceptions of complexity therein, and how these divergences materialize in emerging computational technologies.

An Ecology of Knowing

A computationally-entangled interpretive exploration of academic knowledge produced in the field of management and information systems from origins in the early 20th century, to present. I’m theorizing the analytic metaphor of research conversations as viral genomes (conceptual vocabularies) mutating in and through host populations along a dynamic and rugged fitness landscape (community structure in longitudinal co-authorship and pedagogical networks).
