Primary research areas
Machine learning and artificial intelligence in the financial industry
I do qualitative studies of the adoption of ML and AI in the financial industry with an emphasis on the uptake in asset management and quantitative trading.
Financial advice and financial socialization
I study the history of financial advice and explore contemporary developments in online financial advice with an emphasis on new arenas for financial socialization such as online trading platforms and social media.
Cloud infrastructures and big data management
I study the market for cloud computing provision and the material political economy that shapes the ways in which compute is provisioned to firms in the financial industry in particular, but also to firms in other industries as well as various public and private institutions.
My research helps us better understand the possibilities and challenges of the widespread adoption of ML and AI in finance
I research how emerging digital technologies (machine learning and artificial intelligence mainly) are adopted and leveraged in the financial industry. I do so through qualitative studies (interviewing mainly, but also archival studies). My research is located as the intersection of the Social Studies of Finance, Science and Technology Studies and Economic Sociology.
