Invitation to an Inaugural Lecture
How do technologies mediate work and organization practices?
Technologies are integral to organizational practices. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence, questions about how technologies mediate work and organizing have become increasingly pertinent. Technologies shape how we work, what we see, how we make decisions, and how we evaluate performance. In doing so, they transform the practices and relations they become part of, while also being reshaped through these practices.
In her inaugural lecture, Lise Justesen draws on her research on technology, work, and organizing to examine these dynamics. Inspired by Science and Technology Studies (STS), she approaches technology and organization as entangled in practice. Moving from management and accounting technologies to digitalization, algorithms, and artificial intelligence, the lecture traces how technologies mediate different aspects of work and organizing, often in unexpected ways. Examples from a range of empirical settings illustrate implications for visibility and invisibility, temporality, accountability, and ethics.
