About the event

The Arctic has long been imagined as a distant world of eternal ice, polar nights, and exploration. Today, however, it is becoming a focal point of global geopolitics. As the ice melts, new trade routes are opening, while competition for natural resources, military influence, and strategic control is intensifying.

In his new book, Arctic Meltdown: Rethinking the World, Robert Habeck explores the interests and power struggles shaping the future of the Arctic, and what they mean for the international order. He traces the history of the region, including Denmark’s colonial exploitation of Greenland, and gives insight into the people who live in the Arctic.

Habeck examines the United States’ ambitions regarding Greenland, Russia’s increasingly assertive presence in the Arctic, and China’s interest in the so-called “Polar Silk Road”. Against this backdrop, he asks what the race for new trade routes, strategic influence, and vast natural resources means for international peace and the rules that have shaped the global order.

Join us at Copenhagen Business School for a conversation with Robert Habeck about his new book and the political, economic, and environmental transformations taking place in the Arctic.
