Johannes will present: Interdisciplinary Research Driving Modern Data Science and AI

Abstract

Modern data science sits at the intersection of computer science, mathematics, and domain applications. This talk focuses on the interplay among these disciplines and illustrates how their interaction drives progress in contemporary data science. We will look at two concrete examples. The first concerns deep learning, where insights from mathematical statistics contribute to a deeper understanding of computational pipelines and learning mechanisms. The second addresses the analysis of extremes, where advances in efficient computing algorithms enable the development of mathematically grounded models for complex real-world data. Together, these examples demonstrate that mathematics, computer science, and domain sciences are not only complementary, but fundamentally interdependent in modern data science.
