Description of key CEMS elements
Block Seminar
The Block Seminar is a mandatory one-week course at the start of CEMS Term 1. It brings together CEMS students around an applied and innovative management topic and serves as an academic and social entry point into the CEMS year. The seminar combines faculty-led teaching, international teamwork, applied learning, and interaction with corporate or social partners.
Global Citizenship Seminar
The Global Citizenship Seminar is a mandatory experiential seminar at the start of Term 2. It is organized around themes linked to responsible global citizenship, sustainability, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals. The seminar is designed to strengthen students’ ability to work with global challenges in a responsible, reflective, and stakeholder-oriented way.
CEMS Core Courses
CEMS students take two mandatory core courses during the CEMS year: Global Strategy in Term 1 and Global Leadership in Term 2. At CBS, these core courses are delivered as CEMS-exclusive elements. They provide the academic backbone of the programme by combining research-based teaching with international management themes, applied cases, and interaction across diverse student groups.
CEMS Electives
In addition to the mandatory core courses, students choose from a portfolio of CEMS-approved electives. These electives allow students to tailor their CEMS year to their academic interests and professional goals. The elective portfolio is curated to ensure relevance to the CEMS curriculum and sufficient variety across student interests and backgrounds. Students must also meet the CEMS requirement for coursework in Data Analytics.
Skill Seminars
Skill Seminars are short, practical training seminars focused on skills relevant to international management. Topics may include leadership, consulting, communication, negotiation, sustainability, strategy, marketing, and career development. They are usually interactive and practice-oriented, often involving corporate or social partners, alumni, or professional trainers.
Business Project
The CEMS Business Project is a real-life, consultancy-like project carried out in Term 2. International student teams work on a concrete business challenge provided by a company, social partner, or other relevant organization. The project trains students in problem solving, process management, teamwork, client communication, and result-oriented work. Students are guided by both an academic advisor and a company or organizational representative.
Optional CEMS Research Project
The CEMS Research Project is an optional research-based element that gives students the opportunity to work independently on an international, issue-focused research question. At CBS, the Research Project can also support the MSc thesis process by helping students develop a research framing, literature review, or methodology in advance. The Research Project counts toward the CEMS MIM, while the MSc thesis remains part of the CBS degree.
International Internship
CEMS students must complete an international internship as part of the CEMS MIM. The internship provides professional experience in an international setting and helps students connect their academic learning with practical work experience. The internship can be completed at different points during the graduate study period, as long as it follows CEMS requirements and does not overlap with the two academic CEMS terms.
Language Requirements
CEMS students must meet specific language requirements in addition to English. These requirements reflect the international and multilingual character of the CEMS MIM. Students should consult the official CEMS and CBS guidance early in the programme to understand which language courses, tests, or documentation may be used to fulfil the requirement.
