In order to obtain the PhD degree, Niels Hulgård has submitted his thesis entitled:

Conceiving the Company

A Collection of Essays on the Nature and Purpose of the Basic Unit of Analysis in Business Research

This PhD thesis offers an inquiry into the nature and purpose of the basic unit of analysis in business research: the company. It employs multi-disciplinary modes of inquiry through quantitative analysis, conceptual history, and a theoretical conceptualisation of the company as an ‘unliving entity’. In doing so, it jointly presents and argues the relations between a set of core concepts – ‘company’, ‘firm’, ‘corporation’, ‘organization’, and ‘ownership – found to be crucial to understanding and delimiting the basic phenomenon. Thereby, the thesis empirically, epistemologically, and ontologically addresses the basic motivating question of what and why a company is.

The thesis will be available from research.cbs.dk
