Digital Sustainability
Digital technologies are reshaping economies and societies at an unprecedented pace. At the same time, the urgency of addressing climate change, biodiversity loss, and resource scarcity is growing. Digital Sustainability explores how digitalization can support more sustainable and regenerative futures.
About DIGITAL SUSTAINABILITY
Digital Sustainability sits at the intersection of digital technologies and sustainability. The research theme brings together scholars studying how digitalization shapes social, environmental, and economic well-being across contemporary societies.
Core Focus
Drawing on a socio-technical perspective, we examine both the enabling potential and consequences of digital technologies. Our research explores how digitalization transforms practices, structures, and value creation processes.
A central ambition is to understand and support systemic change toward more regenerative forms of value creation—across individual, organizational, and societal levels.
Vision
Our vision is to advance research that contributes to long-term, sustainable transformations of economies and societies through the responsible, critical, and innovative use of digital technologies. We aim to bridge rigorous academic research with real-world impact, supporting organizations, policymakers, and communities in navigating the transitions towards sustainable and regenerative futures through digitalization.
People and Expertise
The Digital Sustainability theme brings together researchers with expertise in information systems, digital innovation, organization and management studies, entrepreneurship, sustainability and environmental studies.
This interdisciplinary foundation enables us to address complex sustainability challenges that cut across technological, organizational, and societal domains.
Research Activities and Excellence
We conduct both conceptual and empirical research and publish in leading international journals and conferences. The theme actively contributes to advancing theoretical and methodological approaches at the intersection of digitalization and sustainability. Our research addresses key areas such as:
- Digital technologies in the circular economy
- Sustainable consumption and behavioral change
- Digital biodiversity
- Digital innovation for the green transition
- Data governance for sustainability
Teaching Engagement
Members of the Digital Sustainability theme integrate their research into teaching across:
- Undergraduate and graduate programs
- Master’s thesis supervision
- PhD training and research collaboration
- Executive education and professional development.
Through teaching and supervision, we contribute to building capabilities for sustainable digital innovation among future leaders, professionals,
and researchers.
