Stavros Panageas will present: Finance in a Time of Disruptive Growth
Abstract: We examine asset price determination in an environment where young firms disrupt old firms and the rents from innovation are skewed. Financial markets allow a limited degree of risk sharing between innovators and investors through private equity. We analyze the connections between the growth of alternative investments, the dispersion of returns across investors, and the turnover inside the ranks of wealthy individuals. We highlight some key differences in the asset pricing principles pertaining to private and public equity. In particular, conventional approaches to private equity evaluation may indicate that private equity “outperforms” public investments despite the absence of any performance differences.
