More than a numbers game
Accounting for circular economy performance in collaborative initiatives in cities

This PhD thesis explores how circular economy performance is managed and accounted for in collaborative initiatives in cities. With multiple values at play and diverse definitions of circular economy, the understanding of what performance means in such contexts and how it should be accounted for remains unclear. This thesis addresses this issue by studying accounting practices ‘in action’, following circular economy initiatives in six European cities. The results are presented in three articles, with concluding discussion highlighting the opportunity for circular economy accounting to escape the traditional entity-based focus and embrace dialogic accounting practices.
