Drivers and bar­ri­ers for em­ploy­ee own­er­ship, un­der­stood as com­pan­ies where the broad group of em­ploy­ees quite equally own the ma­jor­ity. Dif­fer­ent types of em­ploy­ee own­er­ship and their eco­nom­ic per­form­ance. What are the pros and cons of dif­fer­ent types of em­ploy­ee own­er­ship? The­ory and em­pir­ic­al evid­ence with fo­cus on Den­mark, France, Italy, Spain, UK and USA.
Polit­ics, in­sti­tu­tions and eco­nomy in the BRICs
I have de­veloped a PIE-mod­el to ana­lyze the de­vel­op­ment and in­ter­ac­tions between polit­ics, in­sti­tu­tions and the eco­nomy. The PIE mod­el is ap­plied to ana­lyze the de­vel­op­ment in Brazil, Rus­sia, In­dia and China. The fo­cus is on the de­vel­op­ment after the eco­nom­ic lib­er­al­iz­a­tion in the 1980s or 1990s.

Why are there so few em­ploy­ee-owned firm in Den­mark - how to pro­mote them?

Compared to France, Italy, Spain, UK and USA we have very few employee-owned companies in Denmark. What can we learn from these countries. One of the main explanations is probably the lack of relevant legislation and weak support organizations. But it may also be argued that the overall institutions for being a wage-earner in Denmark are relatively good making less pressure for employee ownership.

New legislation from 2026 may promote employee ownership if adjusted in the right way. As a researcher it is important to follow the process, analyze the results, and contribute with suggestions for improvements.

Pros and Cons of Em­ploy­ee Own­er­ship

This re­search pro­ject was done in 2019-20 to­geth­er with Thomas Poulsen from The Cen­ter of Cor­por­ate Gov­ernance. It was sup­por­ted by the The Dan­ish Trade Uni­on Con­fed­er­a­tion (Fag­bevæ­gel­sens Hov­e­dorgan­isa­tion) and was pub­lished in a re­port and an art­icle in Journ­al of Par­ti­cip­a­tion and Em­ploy­ee Own­er­ship.

Drivers and Bar­ri­ers for em­ploy­ee own­er­ship

This re­search was fin­anced by the Min­istry of Busi­ness 2021-22 as part of an ex­pert group to in­vest­ig­ate con­di­tions for Demo­crat­ic En­ter­prises. As part of a re­search group co­ordin­ated by Thomas Poulsen, I led an in­ter­na­tion­al group of re­search­ers in­vest­ig­at­ing the drivers and bar­ri­ers of em­ploy­ee own­er­ship in France, Italy, Spain, UK and USA. The res­ults were pub­lished in JPEO in 2023 in two spe­cial is­sues.
