INNOVATION, SECURITY & RESILIENCE: PDW
“Innovation, Security, and Resilience: Firm Strategy and Industrial Dynamics amid Critical Infrastructure Disruption” hosted at Copenhagen Business School (On-site) and Online, connected to the forthcoming Industry and Innovation Special Issue.
Critical infrastructure systems – including energy, transportation, telecommunications and digital infrastructure – are increasingly
exposed to geopolitical tensions, technological disruption, cyber threats, climate pressures and supply-chain vulnerabilities. These developments raise important questions for innovation research: How does innovation contribute to the security and resilience of critical infrastructure? How do firms innovate in response to infrastructure vulnerabilities? And how are innovation systems and industrial
dynamics changing as security considerations become increasingly important?
The Special Issue seeks to bring innovation studies into closer conversation with research on security, resilience and critical infrastructure. It examines innovation not only within infrastructure systems themselves, but also at the interfaces between infrastructure providers, firms, policymakers and other actors, where new technologies, organizational arrangements and capabilities emerge and diffuse.
The workshop provides an opportunity to discuss this emerging research agenda and to develop papers addressing these and related questions ahead of the Special Issue submission deadline of 31 January 2027.

Workshop Format
The workshop will consist of two parts.
The first part will introduce the Special Issue and its broader research agenda, followed by two invited research presentations.
Dr. Adriaan van der Loos, Universiteit Utrecht, -
Title: "Economic security and resilience amid geopolitical turbulence: A transition pathway perspective".
Adriaan van der Loos, PhD, is an Assistant Professor at the Copernicus Institute of Sustainable Development in the Innovation Studies group at Utrecht University. His overarching field of study is sustainability transitions, with a particular emphasis on energy transitions, mobility transitions, sustainable resource extraction and the circular economy. Innovation systems, resilience, just transitions, open strategic autonomy and economic geography, in particular, guide his thinking. Empirically, he has conducted extensive research on offshore wind, green hydrogen, circular batteries, sustainable fuels, carbon dioxide removal technologies, and, more broadly, the resilience of innovation systems.
His has a Masters in Political Science – Environmental Governance. He conducted research on transnational private regulation, certification, non-state business-NGO partnerships and bottom-up governance practices, specifically in the field of sustainable forestry management.
He is also currently the Network Manager of the Sustainability Transitions Research Network (STRN).
Simone Vannuccini, Université Côte d’Azur,
Title: "Input Trade Shocks and the Direction of Innovation".
Simone Vannuccini, PhD, is Junior Professor and Chair in Economics of Artificial Intelligence and Innovation at Université Côte d’Azur and GREDEG-CNRS. His research focuses on the economics of innovation and technological change, with a particular emphasis on artificial
intelligence, digitalisation, industrial dynamics, and science, technology and industrial policy. His work explores the evolution of technologies and industries, firms’ innovation strategies, and the economic and policy implications of AI, including questions of competition, strategic autonomy and geopolitical change. Prior to joining Université Côte d’Azur, he held research and teaching positions at the University of Sussex, Imperial College London and Friedrich Schiller University Jena.
Following a short break, the second part of the workshop will take the form of an interactive panel discussion bringing together Special Issue editors and researchers. The panel will discuss the emerging research agenda around innovation, security and resilience, promising theoretical and empirical directions, and opportunities for developing contributions to the Special Issue.
The workshop is intended not only for researchers already preparing submissions to the Special Issue, but also for scholars interested in innovation systems, industrial dynamics, firm strategy, resilience, infrastructure, sustainability transitions, geopolitics and security.
About the Special Issue.
The Special Issue “Innovation, Security, and Resilience: Firm Strategy and Industrial Dynamics amid Critical Infrastructure Disruption” will be published in Industry and Innovation. It welcomes conceptual, theoretical and empirical contributions across sectors including energy, transportation, telecommunications, water, financial systems and health infrastructure, and encourages diverse
methodological and disciplinary approaches.
Among the themes addressed by the Special Issue are organizational responses to infrastructure vulnerabilities; firm strategy and business models; technological and sectoral innovation systems; digital transformation and cybersecurity; resilience and supply-chain security; regulatory innovation; sustainability transitions; and geopolitical competition, technological sovereignty and industrial policy.
