This comprehensive course provides students with a high-level understanding of the technical components and processes involved in building full-stack, web-enabled business applications. Students will learn the fundamental concepts and technologies used in front-end, back-end, and database development, as well as gain insight into the overall software development lifecycle.

By the end of the course, students will have the conceptual knowledge to identify critical components and high-level practical familiarity with the tools and processes required to build dynamic, interactive web application prototypes. This course does not aim to develop advanced programming expertise; rather, it introduces students to the breadth of concepts, tools, and practices involved in modern application development. Through a combination of lectures, hands-on exercises, and scaffolding projects, students will develop the skills needed to contribute effectively to technical teams, make informed decisions on web application development projects, and understand current trends and technologies and their implications for web platforms in organizations. Students will work in groups to develop web applications, applying their knowledge to real-world business scenarios.

The course covers the following topics:

Introduction to Frontend Development
Industry trends and emerging technologies in full-stack web application design
Components and technologies involved in full-stack web application development
The roles of front-end, back-end, and database systems within software applications
A high-level introduction to database management system design and principles
Introduction to client and server application architectures
Web API design and implementation
The role of Web APIs in data sharing between components of full-stack applications
The dynamic landscape of current concepts in development, such as responsive web design
Introduction to Backend Development
Introduction to collaborative and iterative approaches to software development and project management
Requirements engineering and an introduction to product-oriented thinking
Wireframing, User Interface (UI), and User Experience (UX) design

To achieve the grade 12, students should meet the following learning objectives with no or only minor mistakes or errors:

Develop a full-stack web application prototype involving front-end, back-end, and web API components. (1)
Demonstrate the ability to identify and effectively discuss the components involved in full-stack web application design. (2)
Communicate effectively about the strengths and limitations of technologies involved in state-of-the-art full-stack web application design and implementation. (3)
Demonstrate knowledge of client and server application architecture and effectively discuss the challenges associated with client-server architecture. (4)
Reflect on and critically discuss the design, development, implementation, and testing of full-stack web applications. (5)
Relate web-enabled software applications to business needs and identify technical limitations for specific implementations. (6)
Demonstrate familiarity with requirements engineering and apply a product-oriented mindset to the design of web applications. (7)
Demonstrate familiarity with collaborative and iterative approaches to software development and project management. (8)

Course prerequisites

The participants of the course should have passed the course Object Oriented Programming or equivalent.
