Internationalization, strategy, and informality in global markets

My research lies at the intersection of strategy, organizational theory, and international business. I pursue three agendas:

The organizational design of international business, particularly focusing on the complexities that arise as firms disperse activities to foreign locations.

The internationalization and innovation strategies of multinational enterprises, with a particular emphasis on emerging market firms’ ability to catch up with advanced economy industry incumbents.

Firm dynamics in the informal economy, with a particular focus on understanding drivers, processes, and outcomes of informality.

Together with a team of collaborators from Makerere University Kampala and Uganda Small Scale Industry Association, we conduct a field experiment consisting on a sample of around 1,000 Ugandan informal enterprises to understand 1) why business owners choose to remain informal or decide to formalize, and 2) whether firm formalization leads to the adoption of sustainable practices.
