Primary research areas

Design
I study how designers think, behave, and collaborate.
Creativity and Cognition
I study creative processes with a focus on cognitive strategies such as analogy, simulation and incubation, coupled with metacognitive process awareness.
Entrepreneurship and Education
I study how entrepreneurs think, and how higher education pedagogy impacts their thinking, entrepreneurial intentions, and actual start-up behavior.
Video ethnography
I apply the combined use of video ethnography with protocol analyses in the study of creative practices across a variety of domains (architecture, engineering, business).

I want to impact how we educate for creativity and design.

My main research area concerns the study of creativity in domains such as design, marketing, engineering, cuisine, and entrepreneurship. Using video recordings of creative teams at work I study the underlying cognitive processes and mechanisms of creative work. I also utilize experimental research and quasi-experimental research methods to study both the generation and selection of creative ideas.  I also study what forms of technology and learning spaces that may be brought into play for support of creative processes. My research helps inform how we should educate for creative practices in design, entrepreneurship, and management.
