I study the mechanisms underlying human and artificial intelligence – especially language

My research deals with language and technology, from a theoretical and practical point of view.  My main theoretical interests involve the formal mechanisms underlying the construction of meaning in language. This involves the interface between syntax and semantics in individual sentences, and the relations between sentences in discourse.

With the advent of large language models, these questions about the theory of human language and mental abilities have become even more pressing with respect to this new technology; my research focus has shifted to understanding the internal workings of current AI, and in connection with that, engaging with the potential risks and benefits for the economy and society.
