Course content

The course will provide a comprehensive introduction to innovation management with focus on the biotech and pharma sectors. Students will learn about alternative innovation related strategies that can be employed for obtaining competitive advantage. Students will develop an awareness regarding key trade-offs and tensions for strategic decision making in the innovation context. The course will be structured around managerial challenges that firms face in the biotech, pharmaceutical and medical equipment sectors. Students will work individually and in teams on in-class assignments that focus on specific innovation-related challenges.

 

The course will cover the following topics:

 

  • Strategy and business conduct of firms in the biotech and pharma sectors
  • The role of institutions in the innovation process (e.g. universities, intellectual property rights)
  • Corporate R&D and scientific research
  • Appropriability mechanisms
  • Sourcing of external innovation, open innovation, and markets for technology
  • Organizing for Innovation
  • The link between financial markets and corporate innovation
  • Artificial intelligence and IT in the life sciences
  • Applied frameworks for new product development

What you will learn

Following the completion of this course, students should be able to:

  • Account for the main innovation-related terms and taxonomies
  • Evaluate the potential for internal and external knowledge sourcing and how it may help the organization in its pursuit of innovation
  • Make informed choices with respect to alternative R&D projects
  • Reflect on how companies can effectively manage highly creative and skilled R&D personnel
  • Formulate innovation based strategies in high-technology settings and account for their use
  • Understand the role of institutions (universities, intellectual property, financial markets) in the innovation process
  • Acquire professional skills in strategy formulation and innovation management
