Examine Philanthropy to Theorize Ecosystems Change

Jane Bjørn Vedel’s research focuses on large-scale philanthropy and ecosystem change. She examines the organizational and societal implications of major donations to basic, translational, and mission-oriented research. She currently leads a research group built around two major projects that explore how field-level changes in financial structures catalyze shifts in organizational governance, innovation, and professions. She also studies how the largest donations of our time shape the goals and learning processes of receiving organizations. Previously, Vedel’s work concentrated on managing interorganizational relationships, particularly the complexities of collaboration between companies and academic research institutions. Vedel has received awards for excellence in teaching, reviewing, and research, and her work has impact through regular engagement with executive level stakeholders in university management, companies, and foundations. Vedel has raised significant funding for her research as PI, co-PI, and lead, and currently serves as PI for research funding totaling 1,861,713 USD. Her research has been published in leading journals, including Research Policy, Journal of Management Studies, European Management Review, Industry and Innovation, Innovation: Organization & Management, Social Studies of Science, and Nature Reviews.

GRAND - The implications of large-scale grants for the university as an institutionalized organization

GRAND is a multi-case study examining how organizational units within universities respond differently to major changes in financial structures. The project explores how organizations catalyze professional change and manage goal ambiguity as they transition between field structures.

GRANDER - The impact of big funding on the outcomes and institutionalized form of the university

GRANDER is a longitudinal single-case study tracing how a large-scale philanthropic venture evolves over time. The project investigates how its
development is shaped by institutional settings and, in turn, how it transforms its host organizations and broader research ecosystems.
