20 Students on field trip in Uganda

What makes Uganda one of the most vibrant countries in the world when it comes to business start-up? What are the challenges and opportunities facing businesses in a rapidly growing economy? What role does social entrepreneurship play in a country plagued with poverty? These are some of the issues that 20 CBS students are currently pondering upon in the streets of the Ugandan capital, Kampala.

As part of the master elective course ‘Field Study: Entrepreneurship and Private Sector Development’ the students are currently on a 20 days field study trip in Uganda.

In Uganda the CBS students do field research together with students from Makerere University Business School. They work in groups of four with two students from each university. The groups are working on a string of pertinent topics such as social entrepreneurship, successful female entrepreneurs, micro-finance, access to finance for female market traders, collective organizing of the informal sector, opportunities for retail shops, and Danish-Ugandan business partnerships.

The field trip offers the student a unique opportunity to immerse in a developing country context and gain practical experience. The aims of the field trip are threefold: to increase students’ knowledge about entrepreneurship and business in an African context; to sensitize students to doing research in a developing country setting; and expand their intercultural communicative skills.

The field trip is part of a master level elective offered by the Business, Language and Culture Study Board. The course has been designed in collaboration with students and staff from CBS and Makerere University Business School (MUBS) in Uganda.

The students are writing a blog about their experiences and activities. See: Blogspot.com
