Primary research areas

Collaboration across boundaries
In my research, I examine the challenges associated with collaboration across formal boundaries, including organizational and geographic boundaries. My research also provides recommendations, for how to ease the coordination costs that come with cross-boundary collaboration.
Organization design for strategy implementation
A stream of my research looks at the challenges associated with strategy implementation and in particular the exploration, exploitation tradeoff ans well as the potential organization design solutions.
Board dynamics and gender stratification in leadership
Much of my recent work has dealt with gender stratification in leadership. In this stream of work, I have explored what happens to board dynamics when more women directors enter the boardroom, as well as how recruiting firms affect access to boards. In terms of corporate governance, my work also explores how family ties affect access to boards.
Social networks and performance
Several of my papers utilize social network theory to understand performance outcomes, including innovation. My work has also explored the individual networks that support the managerial ability to balance the tradeoff between exploration and exploitation, as well as how networks affect organizational change.

The primary aim of my teaching is to help students understand business strategy. My research has implications for strategy implementation, as I seek to understand how firms and individuals optimize cross boundary collaboration.
