I want to understand how numbers shape our world in times of risk and uncertainty
My research deals with the impact of numbers on organizations and society. I want to understand how numbers such as performance measures of employees, the calculation of carbon emissions, or quantified risks in healthcare influence managers, employees, and organizations. I am especially interested in those things which are difficult to quantify because those numbers will never be able to truly and fully represent what they seek to depict. But such numbers are still used to organize – leading to complex dynamics.
Numbers usually stand for stability and objectivity. But how should this work in times of risk, uncertainty, and poly-crisis? How do numbers shape how we understand a changing and emerging world? And how might numbers actually help us find meaningful actions when the future is unclear and the stability of facts is shaking?
