Data-work for machine learning systems
My PhD project investigates outsourcing of data annotation work to Kenyan workers through online digital labour platforms and business process outsourcing companies. This outsourcing is an integral part of the global production networks of machine learning systems, and the project examines the consequences for workers in their local context of becoming integrated into the digital value networks of the contemporary global economy.
I aim to give voice to those unheard and promote democratization in the global economy
My research draws on ethnographic fieldwork in Nairobi to shed light on the working conditions of the often-overlooked workers, who produce the machine learning systems that earn tech-companies astronomical amounts of wealth. My hope is that my research can create discussions around uneven economic development and value extraction in the global digital economy, and, ultimately, push towards a more just and democratic organization of the contemporary global political economy.
