Primary research areas

Architectural Design of Digital Technologies
I study how the design of digital technologies, such as APIs, platforms, and IT architectures, shapes organizational and societal outcomes. My research explores how architectural design choices enable or constrain value creation and innovation, and what the potential implications are for society.
API Strategy and Digital Value Creation
APIs enable the digital economy, yet many remain underutilized. My research investigates the ubiquity of APIs and their effective use. I focus on the barriers to API adoption and the role of APIs in innovation. The goal is to uncover how businesses can turn APIs from technical tools into strategic assets that drive digital transformation.

Architecting digital technology with purpose

Coen is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Digitalization at Copenhagen Business School (CBS), with a PhD in Information Systems from KIN Center for Digital Innovation at the School of Business and Economics of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

His research explores how the architectural configuration of digital technologies shapes organizational and societal outcomes. He investigate how design choices, particularly in APIs, platform architectures, and IT infrastructures, enable or constrain their potential, influencing both strategic and operational results. His goal is to understand how the design of digital technologies affects an organizations’ ability to create value and the potential broader implications for society, to provide practical and theoretical insights into the architecting of digital technologies with purpose.
