Connecting public sector challenges with academic insights

Johanne Søndergaard’s research explores how public sector institutions, particularly tax authorities, can use data to better understand (non) compliance behavior and thereby design enforcement more effectively. She combines quantitative methods with institutional knowledge to address real-world challenges related to taxation and undeclared work.

Before joining Copenhagen Business School, Johanne worked for six years as an analyst in the Danish Tax Agency’s Compliance Analysis Unit. Her postdoctoral project, funded by the Tax Agency, examines VAT and income compliance among small and medium-sized companies.

Her broader research interests include income underreporting, gender relations, integration and the use of administrative data to inform evidence-based policy. She aims to bridge academic insight with practical governance, helping public institutions think analytically about the problems they face.
