Exploring the Strategy Tripod in the Context of Japan’s Nuclear Industry

Thursday, March 20, 2014 - 13:30 to 15:00

Camilla Nellemann, PhD student at Rikkyo University will present on the strategy tripod of Japan. The presentation draws on data gathered in Japan from 2013 until 2014, including field work in Fukushima:
Three years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake caused a nuclear disaster in Fukushima, Japan. This presentation elaborates on the three competing views on strategy theory; the market-based view, the resource-based view and the institution-based view to discuss which perspective is more capable of analyzing the coping strategies of Japan’s nuclear industry. The discussion recommends the institution-based view accounting for the competitive implications of legal reform and contestation of norms. However, it criticizes the mainstream conceptualization of institutions in the strategic management literature as advanced by Mike W. Peng (2003).

Discussants: Peter Wad (CBDS) and Byoung-Hoon Lee (Chung-Ang Univeristy)
