To­wards a New Geo­graphy of In­nov­a­tion & (Re-)or­gan­iz­ing Glob­al In­nov­a­tion
The or­gan­iz­a­tion of in­nov­a­tion and know­ledge col­lab­or­a­tion is in­creas­ingly glob­al. I study these changes over time and across geo­graphy. This in­volves in-depth stud­ies of know­ledge net­works, cor­por­ate glob­al in­nov­a­tion net­works, and of how sci­ence is or­gan­ized glob­ally, e.g. to re­spond to grand chal­lenges.
Glob­al Value Chains and Glob­al Pro­duc­tion Net­works – Europe and China
Glob­al in­dus­tries are fa­cing ma­jor geo­pol­it­ic­al shifts. These lead to new strategies, new forms of or­gan­iz­ing, and new gov­ernance struc­tures in glob­al cor­por­a­tions – all driv­en by stra­tegic coup­ling and de-coup­ling, cent­ri­fu­gal and cent­ri­pet­al dy­nam­ics, and a shift away from hy­per-glob­al­iz­a­tion to­wards de-risk­ing and re­si­li­ence.
The rise of crit­ic­al­ity. Catch-up and up­grad­ing in emer­ging mar­ket in­dus­tries for sustain­ability trans­ition
New act­ors are tak­ing the lead in trans­form­at­ive tech­no­lo­gies for the en­ergy trans­ition. China has a very unique eco­sys­tem of in­nov­a­tion fa­cil­it­at­ing this. Con­sequently, in­dus­tri­al policy has a comeback, in­volving dir­ec­tion­al­ity, or­ches­tra­tion, ca­pa­city build­ing, al­li­ances, and part­ner­ships.
Glob­al sci­ence col­lab­or­a­tion - aca­dem­ic free­dom, se­cur­it­iz­a­tion, net­works
Break­throughs in sci­ence and in­nov­a­tion rely on glob­al net­works among in­di­vidu­al sci­ent­ists, aca­dem­ic in­sti­tu­tions and com­pan­ies, and na­tion­ally anchored sci­ence dip­lomacy. I study the un­der­ly­ing dy­nam­ics, func­tion­ing and re­si­li­ence of sci­ence and in­nov­a­tion net­works.

The glob­al re-or­gan­iz­a­tion of in­nov­a­tion and in­dus­tries

My research concerns the international re-organization of industries and their value chains during geopolitical shifts. At the organizational level, my research aims to unfold new forms of industrial organization, innovation networks, and governance across time and geography. 

Conceptually I contribute to the current conceptualizations in International Business and Economic Geography on strategic coupling and de-coupling, criticality, industrial policy, sustainability transition, and resilience.  

Empirically, I focus on the role of emerging economy actors in driving international re-organization and the shift away from hyper-globalization towards new industrial policies (directionality, orchestration, networks, alliances, and partnerships). 

I have substantive research-based networks across Denmark, the Nordics, and globally through ongoing projects with world leading universities in China, India, and USA.

Prin­cip­al Co­ordin­at­or for So­cial Sci­ences in Sino-Dan­ish Cen­ter for Re­search and Edu­ca­tion (SDC) , 2015 -

As Prin­cip­al Co­ordin­at­or for So­cial Sci­ences in SDC, I lead the field of col­lab­or­a­tion between Dan­ish and Chinese uni­ver­sit­ies. This in­volves two double de­gree mas­ter pro­grammes and about 20 PhDs.
