Supply Chain Management

You will acquire an understanding of the core concepts, theories and models for strategically designing, managing and controlling global supply chains. You will learn to plan and optimize supply chain operations, but also get the competencies of developing global supply networks and supplier relations. Through this you will be able to influence decisions on both the operational and the strategic level of business management.


Tools for optimization

You will acquire the tools  and skills that goes into the successful planning and control of supply chains. This will give you an overview and detailed knowledge of the processes behind the flow of goods, materials, information or finances, from the moment a customer order triggers the chain of suppliers and until the product reaches end-users. Your knowledge of concepts, theories and models enables you to analyse data and evaluate the effect of changes in a given supply chain. Combining the knowledge and skills you build up, allows you to effectively integrate procurement, production, distribution and logistical processes in a company. The ability to match demand and supply and to have the right product at the right time in the right place is central to the concentration, and essential for the profitability of a company.

Designing supply chains and building networks

The basic understanding of supply chain operations gives you the analytical capability of analysing supply chains, and build on the analysis to tweak existing supply chains or developg new ones. You will know how to improve cost efficiency and responsiveness to new consumer demands or changes in the market; capabilities that create competitive advantage and have immediate impact on company finances. You will also be able to work with improving sustainability of supply chains – both in terms of economic efficiency, and in terms of whether suppliers put you at a risk because they fail to uphold ethical or legal agreements, for instance by polluting the environment, using uncertified lumber or child labour.

You will learn about the importance of building collaborative relationships internally in the company and of  creating and coordinating global sourcing, production and distribution networks. The right network will ensure the necessary efficiency, flexibility and adaptability for your supply chain, and here relationships are particularly important, as you need to know the right people to call or cooperate with in any given context. Good relations increase the reliability of your suppliers and secure their compliance with rules and agreements, which allows you to better manage and assess their abilities to handle suppliers and outsourced tasks. These are valuable insights when making decisions on partners and strategies for sourcing, but also for strategic decisions on where a company should be located, where the suppliers should be, and where all the other links in the chain should be in order to have the most favourable conditions and best circumstances for an efficient and sustainable supply chain.

Corporate supply chain strategy

Learning to see efficient, effective and sustainable supply chains as an integral part of company strategy, enables you to support and maintain the image, brand, and ultimately the overall profitability and success of the company. Also strategic issues such as outsourcing, offshoring and global sourcing are operationalised through supply chain management. And by understanding the strategic aspects of supply design, the supply chain can be used in and as a business model to promote a company’s strategic priorities, such as targeting specific market segments. You will learn how all the individual links of the supply chain work and affect each other, how local changes will affect the whole chain, and how a break in the chain can have immense impact on the delivery performance and therefore the company’s finances. All decisions have implications for supply chain efficiency, and the supply chain must be managed as a whole – this is what you understand and can as a Supply Chain Management graduate.

Supply Chain Management is a two-year master’s programme that is divided into 4 semesters. The autumn semester runs from September through November with exams in December and January; and the spring semester from February through April with exams in May and June.

In the first year you have 7 mandatory courses and a business project. In the second, elective courses and a Master’s thesis.

Additional options

Every year CBS offers SCM relevant electives and minors which can be added in the third semester of your degree. The selection is subject to change, but this year we offer three minors in IT-based modeling of supply chains and implementation, Maritime Business and Strategic Procurement. 

In the second year you have the option to apply for the CEMS programme.
