PhD scholarship in the History of Nordic Civil Society

Copenhagen Business School (CBS), in collaboration with the University of Oslo (UiO), invites applications for a PhD scholarship with a focus on the history of civil society in the Nordic countries since 1800. The position is part of the multidisciplinary UiO:Nordic-financed project Nordic Civil Societies: Global, Transnational and Regional Encounters since 1800 (https://www.uio.no/english/research/strategic-research-areas/nordic/research/research-groups/nordic-civil-societies/index.html). The project explores the role of voluntary organisations between state, market, and the private sphere in the making of and the lived experience of ‘Norden’ and the ‘Nordic model’, in a transnational and historical perspective. The candidate is expected to pursue an independent research project in relation to either the project’s Pillar I: Civil Societies and the State: Critical Perspectives on the Performance of a ‘Nordic Model’ of Society or Pillar II: Nordic Civil Societies since 1800: Transnational Cooperation, International Models and National Adaptions

Possible case studies include, but are not limited to,

  • the self-organisation of ‘outsiders’ (migrants, ethnic minorities, radical political movements),
  • the role of social-scientific knowledge in the governance and governmentality of the third sector,
  • inter-Nordic civil society cooperation,
  • voluntary organisations at the intersection of states and marked.
