Monday, March 18, 2013 - 14:30 to 16:30

On March 18, Asia Research Centre is hosting a guest lecture with Jeff Leong, Partner in Messrs Jeff Leong, Poon & Wong, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The lecture is titled "Asian Perspectives on Mergers and Acquisitions and Foreign Direct Investments: Navigating M&As and FDIs in Volatile Asian Markets".

Investing in a foreign market is a complex task, especially for high growth and volatile markets such as those found in Asia. This is true whether we are talking about mergers and acquisitions, joint venture or greenfield investments. It is not only business people who find themselves caught up in these complex matters, but also academics from various business schools around the world who have written many books and articles on how to do business in Asian markets. When reading the literature in this context it is mostly written by Western academics and is thus to a certain degree biased towards how we in the West perceive Eastern markets. This seminar will turn the perspective around and provide some insights that Asian business advisors identify as the most important constraints and opportunities that foreign companies will experience when venturing into these markets.  It will deal with cross cultural issues as well as problems and opportunities in newly emerging Myanmar and the post Bakun Dam industrial development in the Samalaju area in Sarawak, Malaysia.

Jeff Leong has been instrumental in developing the Firm’s highly regarded reputation in corporate securities and investment law in Malaysia and was involved in establishing industry standards and best practice for due diligence in respect of submissions to the Securities Commission under the Capital Markets and Services Act (formerly known as the Securities Commission Act). Among other things, he has experience with acting in domestic and cross-border merger and acquisition transactions, joint ventures, venture capital investment and foreign investment transactions in Malaysia, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, Australia, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and Thailand. Bio notes for Jeff Leong are attached.
